MRSA Screen

General Information

MRSA by culture is undertaken using Copan Eswabs (pink topped liquid based swabs). Please put "MRSA screen" on the request form

Swabs may be taken from single or dual sites (usually nose and groin for admission screens). Please state site of swabs.

MRSA screening by culture is undertaken in the following circumstances:

  • For low-risk, booked elective patients, nose swabs only
  • For high-risk booked elective patients (eg hip replacement) full screen, including nasal, groin, axilla, skin lesions, invasive devices, sputum and urine, if catheterised.
  • Emergency admissions, nose and groin dual swab.
  • To establish the MRSA status of a group of patients, or staff, including screening during periods of increased incidence on the advice of the Infection Control team.

Please make sure no charcoal swabs are sent.
