Ganglioside Antibodies
General Information
Gangliosides are sialylated glycosphingolipids present in the outer membranes of many cells. The highest concentrations are found in the central and peripheral neuronal tissues. Autoantibodies to gangliosides have been demonstrated in many patients with peripheral neuropathies. The presence of antibodies has a direct contribution to the pathogenesis of the disorders and clinical status can be related to antibody titre. Both IgM and IgG antibodies are clinically useful although of limited disease specificity. They have limited diagnostic potential and are best used as circumstantial evidence to support a clinical diagnosis and to monitor disease activity.
