A Clauss fibrinogen is routinely assayed on all fibrinogen requests.

A derived fibrinogen is an indirect measurement of fibrinogen, and is calculated from the results obtained during the PT assay. However literature shows the assay produces highly variable results and yields higher values than the Clauss technique in samples from certain groups of patients. As fibrinogen levels are useful in interpreting abnormal PT or APTT’s, a derived fibrinogen is performed in the background on all samples requesting a PT and if a reduced result is suspected a Clauss fibrinogen is reflexed and reported.
