Dried blood spot testing

General Information

A service is now available to test dried blood spots for HIV, HBsAg, Syphilis Ab, HCV and HCV PCR if the HCV serology is positive.

This is a useful sample to test if the patient is difficult to bleed or in study groups.

Because of the nature of the sample the sensitivity of the assay is compromised however it is still useful as a screening test.

HCV PCR results are reported qualitatively and request an EDTA sample to confirm the result.

Extra investigations can be requested on dried blood spots providing there are adequate blood spots available.

Please click the following links for information on how to collect the sample and valid and invalid specimen card submissions.

Notes

Extracts for serology samples are stored at -20 for 2 years.
