General Information
Bisoprolol is a synthetic beta-adrenergic blocking agent that has been used clinically since 1984 for the treatment of hypertension. It is available as the hemifumurate salt in 2.5 - 10 mg tablets for oral administration, occasionally in combination with hydrochlorothiazide. The usual adult dose is 5 - 10 mg daily.
Side effects during bisoprolol therapy include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness and fatigue. Several patients survived acute overdosage with up to 2000 mg of the drug after experiencing bradycardia and/or hypotension.
Patient Preparation
For TDM, sample should be taken prior to dose. If toxicity is suspected, take sample at earliest opportunity
