Anti Diuretic Hormone (ADH/Vasopressin)
General Information
ADH is synthesised by the hypothalamus and transported down the pituitary stalk to be stored in the posterior pituitary, which releases ADH in response to physiologic stimulation. ADH promotes water retention by increasing the permeability of nephrons
Diabetes insipidus and SIADH can be diagnosed using serum and urine electrolytes and osmolality, and measurement of ADH is not required.
This test is not routinely available and requests should be discussed with the duty biochemist (bleep 2506)
Patient Preparation
Results of U/E and osmolality on blood and urine required before request ADH test.
Notes
ASSAY NOT ROUTINELY AVAILABLE. Requests should be referred to the Duty Biochemist (Bleep 2506) before a specimen is taken.
