General Information

Amikacin is a semi-synthetic antibiotic that exhibits bactericidal activity against a wide range of pathogens. The determination of serum drug levels is required to achieve optimum therapeutic efficacy and minimize toxicity.

Patient Preparation

For pre-dose levels take the sample 15 minutes before dose.

For post dose levels take the sample 1 hour after the dose is given.

Notes

From Monday 3rd 2018, amikacin requests will be processed at the Heartlands laboratory site.

Amikacin is not currently UKAS accredited. This will be assessed in October 2018.

Reference Range

For once daily dosing aim for pre-dose levels (taken 15 minutes before dose) of <5mg/L and post dose levels (taken 1 hour post dose) of >35mg/L.
