Separation Sciences is part of the Department of Specialist Testing and has specilists working in the clinical speciality of Clinical Chemistry providing a number of services including:

  1. Investigation of Pheochromocytoma
  2. Investigation of Vitamin D deficiency
  3. Investigation of Carcinoid Syndrome
  4. Measurement of plasma homocystiene
  5. Renin and Aldosterone measurements
  6. Thiopurine Methyl Transferase (TPMT) measurements
  7. Prednisolone spot and absorption tests for the investigation of prednisolone resistance or compliance
  8. Measurement of Testosterone by LC/MSMS in females

Separation Sciences use LC/MSMS and other chromatographic techniques as well as providing Radioimmunoassays for Renin and Aldosterone.

We have extensive research experience and have developed a number of bespoke one off assays for various analytes (e.g dexamethasone) and offer collaborative research assay development.

The laboratories at Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital form part of the services provided by University Hospitals Birmingham and are UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) accredited to the ISO 15189:2012 standard. Tests not appearing on the UKAS Schedule of Accreditation currently remain outside of our scope of accreditation. However, these tests have been validated to the same high standard as accredited tests and are performed by the same trained and competent staff.
