Research Investigations / Clinical Trials (Biochemistry)
Before undertaking any biochemical investigations which are to be conducted as part of a research project or clinical trial, the protocol and workload entailed must be discussed with the Department. Failure to do so may jeopardise the project at a later stage with unfortunate consequences.
Current Projects
ITU and Statins
Prof Fang Gow, Alan Jones
Oxidative Stress and the Development of Asthma
C Webster
Includes Isoprostene Assay Development, C Webster in conjunction with Respiratory Medicine and Immunology.
The department has developed an assay for 8-Isoprostane measured by tandem mass spectroscopy
Platelet Activating Factor assays and Anaphylaxis
This project won the Gaddie Poster Prize. We have developed assays for PAF and PAF activity.
Vitamin D in Diabetes
The department has a number of extensive research projects in Vitamin D. We have developed and have been running highly specific tandem mass spectroscopy for vitamin D and some of the metabolites of vitamin D for over 3 years. We have had a number of posters and publications in this area.

Future Projects
Vitamin D Research Program
Comprehensive and expandable program of research into vitamin D metabolism and effect.
C Webster
We have also supervised a large number or MSc projects (Birmingham Univeristy, Wolverhampton University) and have been highly successful in gaining passes and credits. Projects in the pas have included:
- Mevolnate Analysis
- Vitamins A and E by Tandem Mass Spectroscopy
