Emergency Tests
IT SHOULD BE REMEMBERED THAT AN EMERGENCY REQUEST SHOULD NOT BE MADE UNLESS THE RESULT IS REQUIRED FOR THE IMMEDIATE MANAGEMENT OF THE PATIENT.
An emergency service is provided for the following tests
All routine biochemistry including digoxin and osmolality (excluding cyclosporin and xanthochromia analysis)
Other tests may be available depending on the circumstances, but only after consultation with the consultant out of hours.
During Normal Laboratory Working Hours
Analyses requested on an emergency basis must be preceded by a telephone call to 0121 424 2252 from the doctor making the request. Specimens received when this procedure has not been followed will be processed with the bulk of the routine requests. Specimens with request forms from ITU, Neonatal Unit and the Accident Unit are automatically treated as urgent when tests from the emergency repertoire are requested.
Out of Hours Service
This service operates from 20.00h until 8.00h on week days, after 12.00h on Saturday and Bank Holidays and all day on Sunday. The Medical officer making the request must page the Biomedical Scientist on-call.
