Mirtazapine

General Information

Mirtazapine is a tetracyclic piperazinoazepine compound that has been used clincally as an antidepressant since 1994. Adult doses are normally in the a range of 15 - 45 mg once daily.

Adverse effects associated with mirtazapine therapy include somnolence, dizziness, agitation, hypertension and loss of appetite. Overdosage may cause disorientation, drowsiness and tachycardia.

Patient Preparation

For TDM, sample should be taken prior to dose. If toxicity is suspected, take sample at earliest opportunity

Mirtazapine is measured by LC-MS/MS.

Reference Range

Therapeutic range = 30 -80 ug/L

 

Desmethylmirtazapine does not contribute to pharmacological actions.
