Lactate dehydrogenase (LD) Isoenzymes

General Information

PLEASE NOTE, THIS TEST IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE.  For further information contact Duty Biochemist (bleep 2506).

Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is present in most tissues. It is a tetrameric molecule containing four subunits of two possible forms (H and M). The result is five individual isoenzymes:

LDH1 = HHHH (heart, brain, erythrocytes)

LDH2 = HHHM (heart, brain, erythrocytes)

LDH3 = HHMM (brain, kidney)

LDH4 = HMMM (liver, skeletal muscle, kidney)

LDH5 = MMMM (liver, skeletal muscle, ileum)
