Heterophilic Antibodies

General Information

Heterophilic antibodies is a term given to antibodies found in patients serum that are able to bind to animal antibodies used in the immunochemistry assays. A sample containing heterophilic antibodies most commonly gives a falsely raised result in immunoassay tests but falsely low results have also been observed in some cases. To detect the presence of heterophilic antibodies, the laboratory at Cambridge will rerun the sample for the same tests using an alternative method, check the linearity of the result on dilution and retest the sample after treatment with PEG.
