Serology

Serology is a blood test used to detect and measure the levels of antibodies against a microorganism. Bacteria and viruses (antigens) can stimulate the body’s immune system to produce antibodies during an active infection. The levels of antibodies present help the clinician to determine whether an infection is current, or happened some time ago.

Our serology laboratory tests mostly blood samples, but for some tests a urine or CSF sample is required. We test for blood-borne viruses such as HIV, Hepatitis B and C; we can check the immune status of vaccine preventable diseases such as Rubella and Hepatitis B Surface Antibody.
